Pyramid Work.

Almost immediately after his very impressive SNL performance last Saturday, Frank Ocean reveals the music video for his channel ORANGE single, Pyramids. One of my favorite directors in the industry right now, Nabil, directed this one and I am not disappointed. The slightly NSFW video show Frankie Oceans as he goes on a (possibly Molly influenced) psychedelic journey through strip clubs and highways until he ends up at a strange object with John Mayer playing the same guitar solo from the SNL performance. This video is absolutely amazing and Nabil is going to keep growing as a creative visionary. I can’t wait to see how he grows and, hopefully, I’ll be up there with them. channel ORANGE is available now on iTunes.

Blood and Gaga.

So Lady Gaga came out with a fragrance called Fame. The smell is based on blood and semen, supposedly. As gross as that sounds and even though I have no idea what it actually smells like, I think this is great. Lady Gaga also released a five-minute short film to promote this black liquid perfume and its pretty amazing. The dark, twisted, and psychedelic short film a lot of elements that you would expect from Gaga but its executed in a fantastic way. This is dope. This is, kind of, beautiful. This is that shit I do like.

The film debuted on September 13th during a masquerade ball at New York’s Guggenheim Museum.

Big Boy’s Neighborhood Style.

I know I’ve been terrible with the posts lately, but I really have been busy. :(

So I know that you guys are probably tired of all theses Gangnam Style parodies and remakes by now, but I promise you that this one is different! Last Friday, I had the amazing opportunity to shoot a Power 106 Gangnam Style video with the one and only PSY and Big Boy’s Neighborhood. Oh man, I was so excited when I heard that we were doing this. I even dressed the part and tried to match Psy’s look in the video as close as possible. I’m a little awkward in the video at first, but I mean, I’m making a video with someone I grew up listening to! I love Psy. Check out the video and see for yourself. Hypebeast started a new video series called The Videographers Guide. Its a new web series that documents young filmmakers as they produce videos mostly for the web in all different types of genres. In this first episode, the series talks about the topic of music videos and the filmmakers in the genre both back in the day and today. They go from the beginnings of the music video to its now mass produceable self within the digital community.

I really enjoy this and look forward to the future episodes. I think this is great for people starting out in videography to watch so that they can learn some of the good and bad of the industry today. I love to do it on the side, but I don’t know if I could ever only do video. I have been itching to make a music video.

Big Booty Heaux.

I might be hypebeastin‘ a bit, but everything that comes out of DONDA‘s doors is amazing. From the 2 Chainz B.O.A.T. album covers to, now, the music video for Birthday Song, DONDA has been the epitome of what bougie ghetto is and truly represents Kanye‘s design sense in the best way possible.

Directed by Andreas Nilsson, an executive/director under Kanye’s DONDA creative collective, the music video for 2 Chainz and Ye’s Birthday Song features an amazing pseudo-one shot take of an adult version of a backyard birthday party. The visual genius that is this music video has everything from eerie quadruplets to a crazy midget to a backyard circus, and possibly some hate crimes towards clowns. The more work I see from DONDA, the more I really want to work for them, and being that its a creative agency with Kanye West in charge doesn’t help either. Birthday Song is from 2 Chainz album, Based on a T.R.U. Story, which is in stores now.

Sorry for the lack of updates, but I’ve been pretty busy lately. Not this past weekend, but the weekend before, I was given the chance to go and cover Rock the Bells 2012 in San Bernardino with my Power 106 family (who had the best presence by far at the event). As excited as I was to cover the events, I was not excited for the drive out there and the weather. The first day was almost 110 degrees with no wind and the second day was about the same, but luckily with some wind this time.

I didn’t get to catch all of the acts, but I did manage to cover Tyga, Common, Pusha T, J.Cole, Kendrick Lamar and friends, Hieroglyphics, and Kid Cudi. I was sad that I missed 2 Chainz, but the other acts, I can live without seeing, at least, for now (I can afford to see Nas later in my life, don’t hurt me). By mid-day of day 2, I was way too exhausted and dehydrated to stay the rest of the day. I wish that the Los Angeles lineup had A$AP Rocky in it, I would’ve definitely stayed for that. I got to finally see Common live and saw 93′ til Infinity live too, so I’m pretty good.

I was able to get a lot of good video coverage and some photos from the event and put together my own re-cap for it. It also has some non-performance footage and its the fun kind, and by the fun kind, I mean the possibly NSFW kind! I posted it below and its kind of long, running at 5 minutes, but please take the time to watch it and see what you missed! Enjoy! :)

Farmers Insurance.

I’ve always been a bit of a fan of RiFF RaFF. I knew I recognized Dirty Nasty, and with some research, found out he’s actor, Simon Rex. And Andy Milonakis, well, he let Based God fuck his bitch.

With their powers combined, they have become the hip-hop trio known as Three Loco. The group is under Diplo‘s MAD DECENT label and just dropped one of their first music videos. The video and song for We Are Farmers is absolutely amazing, using a sample from the Farmers Insurance theme song, which is absolute genius. The song also features some rhymes from Diplo, which I have yet to see until now. Three Loco is currently working on an EP set to be released via MAD DECENT on September 4. They will also be performing live at the MAD DECENT Block Party which is going to be in Los Angeles on August 25. I’m pretty excited.

Zucchini Blossolini.

One of my favorite people to blog about is back. Action Bronson brings us a new video in collaboration with MySpace for their OneToWatch series on cooking his fried zucchini blossoms. Bronson is a huge fan of food, and even took up the official title as chef before he actually gave it up for the rap game. The zucchini blossoms are stuffed with ricotta and served with a pseudo-tomato jam. Action Bronson also goes into his background a little bit and we get to learn about his life growing up in Queens and his experience as a musician. Also we get to see him trash on a Whole Foods worker. Hilarious.

G.O.O.D. Music, Young Money, and YG all together in one video? You might be thinking that this is the collab of the century, but its actually just the new Adidas commercial with Jeremy Scott and his favorites: Nicki Minaj, Big Sean, and my favorite Korean pop sensation 2NE1. The new advertising campaign is called “All Originals Represent” and feature the artists representing different parts from all around the world. Hermann Deininger, CMO of the brand, says, “This generation is always looking for a chance to go all in to their own beat; an opportunity to show the world their passions and their talents. This campaign builds on the desire for self-expression, and we are enabling our consumers to share with us and the world their creativity, and what originality means to them“. The campaign will be represented in television, cinema, digital, retail, and print, focusing on these different cities around the world.

Gangnam Style.

I wasn’t going to post this, but I think it is way too amazing not to. Even my non-Korean co-workers love it, so I think the whole world should enjoy this video too. Or at least the few of you that will end up reading and watching this.

I was originally going to post this a few days ago, but I haven’t had the time. I guess its good that I waited because the other day, the video was on CNN for going viral. The video now has almost 16 million views in almost three weeks. People like T-Pain and Josh Groban have even tweeted about it (yeah, they’re not that important but still).

Besides the amazing cameos in the video, the video itself is an art piece. All the different location shots, Psy‘s humor, the dance, and the cinemaography of everything is so fantastic. I don’t think I can count the number of times I’ve seen the video already. I love that Korea is making amazing things like this in both music and film, although I do hate kpop right now. Korea’s entertainment industry is growing aesthetically and sonically at a ridiculous rate and I can’t wait to see where it goes.
